Repository Crisis Scorecards
Abstract
As an ESIP Community Fellow supporting the Sustainable Data Management cluster, I helped develop Repository Crisis Scorecards — a toolkit that lets data repository staff evaluate how well their systems could withstand crisis scenarios. The scorecards were created during a March 2025 sprint, building on prior scorecard methodology, and are intended to help established repositories, informal data collectors, and other dataset managers strengthen long-term data publication and preservation planning.
Methodology
Collaborated with a multi-institution team during a dedicated sprint to design scorecard criteria across several crisis scenarios, adapting prior repository-evaluation scorecard methodology.
Key Findings
This work is described in our preprint, "Can a Data Repository Survive a Crisis? Development of the Repository Crisis Scorecards" (EarthArXiv, September 2026, in review).
Implications
Gives repositories, informal data collectors, and other dataset managers a practical way to assess and strengthen resilience and long-term data preservation planning.
